Kona Aquatics tryouts

Kona Aquatics is currently holding tryouts for kids ages 8-11 who enjoy swimming and can swim 25 yards of the freestyle. To tryout simple go to the Kona Aquatics pool from 3-4 p.m. any day. Ask for coach Eric or Coach Kristen on the mauka side of the pool.

Department of Parks and Recreation Kona District

Basketball Development Training Program: A basketball development training program will be held at Kekuaokalani Gym at Old Airport Park on Feb. 26, March 4, 11 and 26 for kids ages 10-and-up. This is an advanced, year round program and previous experience is preferred. Cheyenne Meyer, Eddie “Piki” Heyward, Lawrence Kauka, Rory Cabatbat and James “Nish” Nishimura will instruct the program. Practice sessions last from 9:30-11:45 a.m. For more information call 327-3553.

Age Group basketball registration: The Department of Parks and Recreation is now accepting registration for age group basketball for kids ages 9-14. Registration forms can be picked up at Kekuaokalani Gym Monday-Thursday from 12:30-2:30 p.m. League play is scheduled to start March 16. The DP&R is also looking for volunteers, coaches and officials. For more information call Diego or James at 327-3553.

Coaches meeting for Age Group Baseball: The Department of Parks and Recreation will hold a coaches meeting at Kekuaokalani Gym on Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss the upcoming season and league rules. The season starts March 16 for kids ages 9-14. The DP&R is also looking for referees. For more information call Diego or James at 327-3553.

Bubble Run

5K Family Fun runs will host the Bubble Run on March 5 at 8 a.m. The course will utilize all of Old Airport Park. Four bubble dispensing towers will be placed throughout the race. For more information contact Bill at 896-4535 or cbarmer@hotmail.com.

Konawaena FFA Golf Tourney Fundraiser

The first Konawaena Future Farmers of America Golf Tournament will be held on March 18 at the Big Island Country Club. The entry fee for the 2-person scramble event is $120 per person and includes golf, breakfast, pupus, lunch and prizes. There will be a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start with registration at 6:30 a.m.

Proceeds for the tourney will assist the Konawaena Future Farmers of America chapter by paying for them to attend the State FFA Conference, which will be held on Kauai.

Hawaii Cycling Club

The Dragon: HCC will host the annual event on March 12 at 7 a.m. With its nine hills in the Keauhou area, the Dragon is the most unique bicycle event on the Big Island.

Race a hill, wait until everyone has finished, ride casually to the next hill, race the hill, etc.

The event is free but all participants are required to have an annual USA Cycling or a $10 one Day USA Cycling Membership for insurance.

Registration must be done at usacycling.org and the registration deadline is March 3.

Kua Bay Time Trial: Training for Lavaman? The 12.2 mile Kua Bay is scheduled for March 18, starting at 7 a.m. with registration from 6:20–6:40 a.m. outside Bike Works Beach and Sports in the Queen’s Shops.

This time trial is the first half of the Lavaman course, featuring the ever popular and challenging hills to the Scenic Overlook and the Kua Bay turnoff.

This time trial is free to HCC members. One day memberships are available. Students 18-and-under receive a free 2017 membership.

Novices may either compete or ride the course as a non-competitive Saturday ride.

Members of other bicycling clubs and athletes training on their own are encouraged to participate.

St. Michael’s Golf Tournament

St. Michael, the Archangel Church, will host its eighth annual golf tournament on March 26 at the Kona Country Club. Entry fee is $300 for 2-person teams. The tournament is limited to the first 100 golfers.

Prizes will be given, including a $1-million dollar hole-in-one par-3 challenge. Every par-3 offers a chance at winning a $10k prize for a hole-in-one. Lunch and a silent auction will be included.
